July 15,1953: The Post 492 baseball team “finished in second place in the San Diego County League play. The season was considered a success from the players point of view. A total Post expenditure of $100.00 was incurred.” It was decided to sponsor the team again in 1954.

“Comrade Wallace suggested that the Post investigate the possibly of incorporating.”

August 19, 1953: “Dr. Roberts reported on the proceedings of the recent State Convention in Long Beach.” A resolution that the United States should withdraw from the United Nations “failed to pass by a close vote. The general tone of the Convention was to the effect that we had lost the Korean war.”

November 18,1953: “The Post colors were in a prominent position at the meeting, following an unexplained absence from several meetings in the immediate past.” (The problem was probably caused because meetings were held in member’s homes on a rotating basis.)

“A general discussion of membership for the Junior Group was held.”

“It was suggested that the Post should adopt some regular procedure of paying respect to deceased members in order that younger members of the Post may gain a feeling of acquaintance with the departed comrades.”

January 20,1954: “Mr. Brucker tendered his resignation as coach of the Post Baseball Team. A suitable replacement is expected to be obtained before the season opens.”

There was also discussion about support for the “Bricker Amendment” that “declared no treaty could be made by the United States that conflicted with the Constitution.” Passage would limit the president’s ability to enter agreements with foreign countries. (The bill would not pass.)

The final item on the agenda involved “the desirability of all members owning and wearing their caps as a Badge of American Legion.”

February 17, 1954: “Comrade George Fisher reported on the latest developments in the never-ending efforts to expose Communist activity in the Community. He expressed particular concern over the possibility of increasing Communist activity in the new state of Baja California, Mexico.”

March 17, 1954: Methods to increase interest in Memorial Day Services were discussed.

April 21, 1954: An invitation was received to join Post 6 for Memorial Day Ceremonies in Balboa Park. “The letter was filed without action.”

“Neither a sponsor nor coach has been obtained” for the baseball team. It was noted, “The Hoover team appeared to require very strong leadership to make its support worthwhile.” There was discussion instead to support junior or midget leagues jointly with the City Recreation Department.

A resolution was sent to Congressman Harold Velde, Chairman of the House Un-American Activities Committee, “for the exceptional courtesy they (the committee) displayed throughout the hearings” which were held in San Diego.

In recognition of Memorial Day, Post 492 recognized the following departed comrades: Bruce Adams, John G. Downey, George Heyneman, Arthur D. Hughes, George Kilgore, Arthur A. Lester, John C. Merrick, Cornelius D. Sullivan, Oscar G. Thompson, and Chester H. Webber.

“…a last minute change in plans was making it possible for the Post to again enter the Hoover High School team in the Class A, American Legion play.”

June 16, 1954: “Comrade Craghead, reporting for the baseball committee, advised “the Southern San Diego County league could end in a tie making a playoff necessary,”

Ronald Toothaker to depart for Boys State on June 18,1954.
