1951-1952 – Post Commander Ronald T. Strong

 

July 18, 1951: $20.00 was given to Pacific Beach Post 552 to assist sponsor their baseball team.

 

September 19, 1951: Post 492 resolved to actively support Public Housing for Defense workers, men in service and needy veterans.

 

November 21, 1951: Ralph Roberts reported that high income bracket families have been ordered to leave housing projects. Resolved to invite ambulatory patients from Naval Hospital to attend Post 492 Christmas Party. Idea dropped after it was learned that patients responded poorly to such events.

 

Tribute was paid to Judge Hewicker “for his extensive efforts and time given to help incompetent Veterans in their problems.”

 

A registered letter was received from the American Legion Armistice Day Association of San Diego

asking if activities should continue or be disbanded. Post 492 voted to discontinue the observation.

 

Jay Conner’s Post 492 history from 1938 was read and copies were given to every member.

 

“Comrade Munson suggested that it might be well to consider inviting younger men into our group.”

 

June 18, 1952: “It was announced with pride that the son of Comrade Richmond Jackson had recently graduated from Annapolis Naval Academy.”

 

1952-1953 – Post Commander James B. Bowen

 

August 20, 1952: General George Fisher presented a report on the State Convention in Fresno. “He remarked the weather was hot, but not the convention.” He felt the Hollywood Post “had gone a little haywire” by wanting to disbar lawyers who represented Hollywood Communists.

 

In a year-end report, it was written, “Post sponsored baseball team for first time.” No mention of a baseball team was found in the minutes.

 

December 17, 1952: Sidney Robinson was “made” historian. “(he was reluctant to accept.)”

 

March 18,1953: “It was moved and seconded to purchase two (2) sets of colors. One for the regular group and one for the younger group. It was decided that when the younger members meet with the regular group at the regular meetings they would be our guests and are not to be assessed for refreshments.”

 

May 20,1953: Howard Craghead reported that Post 492 would sponsor the Hoover High School junior baseball team. They would look for a commercial sponsor to purchase uniforms. Insurance would cost $25.00 and umpire fees would be $75.00. If the team did well and advance in the American Legion Tournament, the cost could be up to $1,000. (In 1953, $100 had the equivalent purchasing power of $1,109.65 today.)

 

“Comrade Ray Smith suggested voluntary contributions for this purpose and pledged $100.00 to start the ball rolling. This brought immediate response, and in the matter of a few minutes there were $600.00 in firm pledges.”

 

June 17, 1953: “Howard Craghead gave a very interesting report on baseball activity. The boys have lost but one game and are in second place in the standings for this area.”

 

“Bob Davis reported on the Juniors of our Post 492. This group is composed of nine regular members with four good prospects in the offing.”

 

The 1953-1954 Post roster listed 31 members and 11 “Junior” members.
