Ralph Wallace’s son Edward, was selected for Boys State. 

 

April 21, 1948: An unnamed member stated, “He understood our Post was sponsoring a member of the student body from Mission Valley Tech.” (This was in reference to the County’s Anthony Home, predecessor to Juvenile Hall.)

 

Post 492 reportedly in desperate financial condition. Dues increased to $15.00/year eff. October 1948.

 

June 16, 1948: “A letter from James F. O’Neil, National Commander, asking for increased membership, was read. (Post 492 membership increased to 31 members in 1948.)

 

1948-1949 – Post Commander Hiram G. Dillin

November 17, 1948: A Mr. Ning of China Air Lines spoke about China’s need for American aid. “Nothing else could keep the Communists out.” He added, “The Communists might occupy China, but they will never conquer it.”

 

March 16, 1949. “Baseball: Ted Chambers – no comment.”

 

1949-1950 – Post Commander Arthur B. Lester

 

August 17, 1949: It was announced Governor Warren had selected John Hewicker for the San Diego County Superior Court bench. 

 

September 21, 1949: “Discussion of Rifles by Jackson lead to suggestion by Strong for rifle inspection at the next meeting. Baseball progress was discussed.”

 

October 19, 1949: “As the meeting opened, someone mentioned the subject of rifles. Your scribe hung up his pencil.”

 

Retired Navy Rear Admiral Leslie E. Gehres was a guest at the (January 18, 1950) Post 492 meeting.”

 

February 7, 1950: Post 492 member Bruce A. Adams (53) died today. As a boy, he lived in the home now used as a curio shop on Presidio Golf Course.

 

March 15, 1950: General George Fisher of Post 6 spoke about Communist Front Organizations and their activities.

 

April 19, 1950: General Fisher invited Post 492 members to his seminar on May 14, 1950.

 

May 17, 1950: “It was regularly moved and seconded that a letter from this Post be directed to General Fisher complimenting him for the Seminar held May 14th.”

 

1950-1951 – Post Commander Edward C. Chambers

 

August 16, 1950: “Post assets are $261.14”

 

“The FBI asked the American Legion for cooperation against sabotage. etc.”

 

Members attended the funerals of former Post Commanders Cornelius Sullivan on December 18, 1950 and George Heyneman on December 22,1950,

 

February 21, 1951: “Howard Craghead was named Chairman for the Junior Baseball program.” Cragheadpitched for the Cleveland Indians in 1931 and 1933. “The Professor” was also with the San Diego Padres from 1936 through 1938 and again in 1940. He joined Post 492 in November 1950.
